This study examines the methods artists use to justify violence in film. Previous research has indicated that audiences process justified and unjustified media violence differently, but the research has often relied upon a simplistic definition of justified violence. This study explores the nature of justified violence and the conventions that writers and directors use to make justified violence acceptable to viewers. This research interprets the motivations behind physically aggressive acts in the top grossing films of 2012.
