This paper is about the moral panic of being buried alive. With modern technology there is no chance of someone going through a proper burial and being buried alive, the body is always drained of all of its fluids before hand. This fear was based off the disturbing stories of Edgar Allen Poe, and was a very widespread panic. This alarm started in the 18th and 19th centuries. The grassroots public consists of the people who feared that there was a chance they had buried there loved ones alive. I would consider the creators of the safety and escape coffins to be the moral entrepreneurs, since this showed that there was a real reason for panic. During the beginning of this panic it really wasn’t unheard of for someone to be buried alive, and this panic encouraged technological advances in order to avoid these problems, therefore it benefited the general public. Edgar Allen Poe himself is the ‘folk devil’ for this panic since the idea of this panic came from his imagination, and was well known because of his works. Today no one has reason to worry about someone being buried alive if it is done properly, but before technology I can see where anyone who has buried a loved one would have reason for fear.
